![]() ![]() I mean, it’s certainly possible to read it without any context, but I just don’t think it’ll hold up as well. I think I’ve seen a few folks say it could work as a standalone piece, but I really disagree. The Roses of May is definitely a sequel to The Butterfly Garden. It was kind of nice to go in cold and without much in the way of expectations as far as plot goes, but I will briefly cover the story. I didn’t even read the plot summary because I was so sure that Dot would pull out another wonderful work. ![]() ![]() Let me just start off by saying that even though I hyped this book up in my mind, it completely lived up to it. I had just read The Butterfly Garden a month or two beforehand and couldn’t believe my luck in stumbling across an ARC of the sequel. I gave The Butterfly Garden five stars and was really looking forward to what Dot Hutchison was up to next. I was STOKED when I saw this on NetGalley. ![]() Novels like “The Time Machine, “The Island of Doctor Moreau,” and “War of the Worlds” captivated my imagination when I was growing up. Tolkien made me realize that both the devil and God can be found in the details. But, the books the movies come from were a revelation when they were written in the 1950’s. ![]() The entire Middle Earth saga ( “The Hobbit,” “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and “The Silmarillion”) is a breathtaking masterpiece. The Peter Jackson films are awesome, too. One of the more underrated books he’s written is called “Relentless” and may be a compilation of every author’s worst nightmares. Koontz is another prolific writer with great commercial success. The “Odd Thomas” series is very popular and very fun. Lewis has had as big of an impact on me as a writer and a person as anyone else on the planet. ![]() “The Screwtape Letters” also blew me away in high school and books like “Mere Christianity” and “A Grief Observed” are works I recommend to everyone. Lewis and his fantastic Chronicles of Narnia series because of both comparisons to my series, “The Four Corners,” and the fact that we share the same first two initials (although, I’m Christopher Scott – not Clive Staples.) It can't be an accident that Perry placed her story about collective panic in Essex. Though even he, in moments, thinks, "But was it too great a stretch to imagine the Intelligence that once had split the Red Sea taking the trouble to send a little admonition to the sinners of a briny Essex parish?" Those wings belong to the titular Essex Serpent, a water serpent terrorizing the village - or according to William Ransome, just rumor a born of the dead man who washed up on shore, the missing sheep, a lost child, the unseasonable darkness, and a strange waver in the line of the water. Near the coastal village of Aldwinter, where Cora eventually moves to be closer to the Ransomes, nature is not inertly beautiful, but dangerous and alive: A sheep is sucked into the mud, boats are taken by the water, earthquakes split houses, and the residents wake in the mornings "from dreams of wet black wings." ![]() Perry is good at catching the special collective dread that enflames communities - the fear that something sinister is stirring, waiting just out of sight. ![]() ![]() In Du Bois’ Seventh Ward, which seeks to recreate Du Bois’ study. Many times when life tosses me a certain peculiarity or uneasiness, I would remember and contemplate on a scene, a prose, a quotation, or a general idea about the fate of one of the character in this book, and suddenly I would feel easier and say to myself: this is life. It not only defines how I understand my national identity, but also serves as a foundation for my cognition and interpretation of almost everything. I cannot say that I felt she did a good job here, though, as I walked away thinking that the story was completely ludicrous in view of the known facts and that, rather than offering me a believable interpretation of the people, she had offered an interpretation that I would judge has less than an hair’s breadth of being true. I have loved Gregory at times because I felt her fictional accounts fit so perfectly into the narrative that we know to be true, into the facts that surround the tale. I love historical fiction that contains MORE of the historical and LESS of the fiction. ![]() Book number twelve in the Tudor saga, The Queen’s Fool seems to me to be one of Gregory’s weaker efforts, or perhaps I am growing tired of her at last. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rachel Van Dyken’s Bachelors Of Arizona Books In Order Click here to subscribe Audible Free Trial #ad.
